Sigh...

art work by Mary Ann Boysen via

I have wanted to have a house of my own since I was a little girl.My dream had always been to live in a bungalow/cottage with a cute little garden and a shingled roof.My imagination did not go any further on this and I was not really picky, but having lived more than half my life in spacious houses (all courtesy of the Indian Army), I was totally unprepared for Apartment Living.

Not having a 'chatt'(terrace) where my family could sit during summers and have long long chats under the moonlight is heartbreaking. Not having a garden where I could potter around during weekends (not that I really would have) is disappointing.I wanted a tree in my garden with a swing for my non existent kids.I wanted my dogs (again, non existent) to have free rein over my backyard.I want to have the opportunity to sit in my verandah and curse my dogs when they become extra playful and dig up my garden which of course, would be verdant and a little wild.I want picket fences and a wooden gate.

I know that it's not impossible to have it, just not at this time, when I want all this the most.I know that I shouldn't whine and be thankful for what I have got, but indulging in self pity is good once in a while, isn't it?

What about you? Do you like where you live? Are you living my dream? and if you are, then I want you to get up now and go hug the tree in your backyard and roll in the grass.

Sigh....

  1. That didn't feel like a melodramatic post to me. It felt like a post filled with longing. Sometimes it feels like there is just no way to make an apartment feel like a house. Is there any small space you can repurpose into little sitting area outside? A patio you might load with plants and pretty lighting.

I'm sorry your cage is feeling too small right now. I hope you can fly out of it soon!

  3. I am the opposite, after I left my parent's home I've never lived in a house. Too much work.

I've blogged about the fact that I love plants, and that I've had gardens and vegetable gardens all while living in an apartment. There's always a sunny spot somewhere to grow something. See if you can find it, until you find your dream home.

  4. Sumi,
We're at the same place in time. We rent, in a city I'm yet to feel at home in. I would like to put down roots, but I don't see it happening for the next few years. So 'm trying to make the best of what I have right now. Sometimes its ice to have a dream, but don't let it get you down and take away from what you have. did that make sense?

  5. @Clara: Thanks for visiting. You just spoke like my mom.Whenever I open my mouth about a big house, she shows me all the areas in my apartment that need to be dusted and tells me to 'VISUALIZE' what will happen in the big house. She KNOWS how lazy I am.:-)

@Gagan : I know..putting down roots for once is something on my life list.Never had that before.

  6. Love your blog Sumi! I am an army kid too. I think the pink flower at my house is a variety of Dahlia grown in this area but I am not sure.

  8. I live in an independent house, and still yearn for something different...each time I see a beautifully done up space, I say 'hey, I should have done that!'but then, when i get the opportunity, I back out scared if things go wrong...

All said and done, I love the place I love in and all the conveniences it offers and the inconveniences( no neighbors to talk to)
